The Purpose
The purpose of the NLGL creative synthesis is to participate in a project-based inquiry throughout the course of study at N.C. State. A compelling question, which dictated what we wanted to learn by the end of our program, was asked at the beginning of the program. Throughout the next few semesters, artifacts were gathered to help answer this compelling question. This project-based inquiry allowed me to take control of what I wanted to learn from this program. It also gave me a hands-on approach to learning about reading and about new literacies.
The diagram below was created to help visualize the project-based inquiry (PBI) approach to learning in the NLGL program. A compelling question was developed at the beginning of the program. Throughout the classes of the program, I gathered and analyzed the data from new literacies, global learning, leadership, and content knowledge. This information helped guide my PBI project and ultimately helped me to start answering my compelling question. This weebly is part of the next step in the process - to creatively synthesize information and to publish. All of the artifacts on this weebly help answer my compelling question.

Compelling Question
How do I incorporate web 2.0 tools and other instructional strategies effectively in instruction with struggling readers in an elementary school setting?
Many of my students throughout the my first three years of teaching have been considered struggling readers. They also live in a part of the county that has a lower income and where technology is scarce and not used on a daily basis. Therefore, I wanted to not only incorporate web 2.0 tools to provide the opportunity to investigate new technologies, but also wanted to make sure that it was effective in helping with their reading instruction. Many of the students that I work with also come from families where reading and education is not a priority in their school. I came in to the program to try and find ways that I could not only motivate these students to care about reading but also to help them become more strategic readers in this process. Therefore, this Creative Synthesis project hopes to answer how to effectively use these new literacies and technologies to motivate struggling readers.
