Action Research Project, ECI 545
Building upon my experience of the PBI project from ECI 546 and seeing how new technologies helped motivated both successful and struggling readers, I wanted to find out more about reading motivation. Therefore, I decided to do my Action Research Project on the Reading Motivation Theory.
In my research, I found several aspects of reading motivation that students use. I specifically wanted to prove that if you use a text that a child is interested in, it will motivate him to read the text even if the text is not within his instructional level. This proved to be true. I used the Motivation To Read Profile on a struggling reader to find out what he was interested in and his self-concept as a reader. Based on this information, I chose some texts that were of interest to him. I allowed him to choose between the books that he wanted to read. The element of choice and having a text that was of interest helped motivate him to read the book from the front to the back, even though it was a few levels above his instructional level.
